Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegata has beautiful distinguishable variegated leaves that are eye-catching. It requires little care and best to grow this plant with partial shade. Avoid direct bright sunlight that will burn the leaves in the long run. Well-drained but moist soil is preferred and prevent overwatering or dry soil. Unfertilised Alocasia Macrorrhizos will grow very slow so fertilise it every few weeks.

Alocasia Sinuata or Alocasia ‘Quilted Dreams’, characterised by the rugged texture on its foliage has a pattern that looks like a jewel. Hence, it has another group name as the Jewel Alocasia or more commonly known as the elephant ear. Alocasia Sinuata needs bright but indirect light. It prefers its soil to be a little drier before watering.

Alocasia Frydek or Alocasia Green Velvet has medium to dark green foliage with defined white veins set a vibrant contrast to these captivating elephant ears. Soil should be slightly damp at all times but be careful not to overwater it as it is vulnerable to excessive water that will lead to root rot. Observe the soil moisture instead of routine watering. Alocasia Frydek is also sensitive to light intensity, so place it in a bright spot while avoiding direct sunlight. The scientific name is Alocasia Micholitziana ‘Frydek’ and originates from the Philippines.

Alocasia Zebrina most prominent feature is the dark tiger stripes on its beige stems contrasted by broad, deep green arrow-shaped foliage which does not steal the limelight from its alluring peculiarity. The soil is ideally moist but not soggy. One way to counter overwatering is to have very well-drained soil. Avoid direct sunlight as it will scorch the leaves. Note that the sap of Alocasia Zebrina can cause skin irritation and the plant is poisonous when ingested. It should be kept out of reach for small children and pets.

Alocasia Pink Dragon is known for its striking pink petioles and greyish-white veins on the leaves. The foliage of this houseplant sticks out like the ‘Elephant Ear’. As it grows in the rainforest, it needs moist soil and high humidity. Alocasia Pink Dragon is sensitive to excessive water which will cause the root to rot. If your Alocasia gets brown leaves, the cause is likely it is getting too much water. Alocasia regularly drips water from the leaves. That is normal, and cannot be prevented. The term is called ‘guttation’.
