Hibiscus sabdariffa, which is also known as Roselle, is a tropical plant known for its vibrant red calyces, which are commonly used to make herbal teas, jams, sauces, and traditional medicines. Native to West Africa and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, Roselle belongs to the Malvaceae (mallow) family. It thrives in warm climates and well-drained soils, typically growing up to 2–2.5 meters tall. The plant produces attractive yellow flowers with a red center, which later develop into fleshy red calyces. These calyces are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and anthocyanins, offering potential health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, aiding digestion, and boosting the immune system. Roselle is also culturally significant in many countries, especially in the preparation of festive beverages like hibiscus tea (known as “zobo” in Nigeria or “agua de Jamaica” in Latin America). Due to its versatility and nutritional properties, Roselle continues to be valued both as a food ingredient and a medicinal plant across the world.
