Papaya tree leaves are large and deeply palmately lobed. The unripe green fruit can be eaten cooked, but not raw due to its poisonous latex content. The ripe papaya fruit is usually eaten raw, without skin or seeds. The black seeds are edible and have a sharp, spicy taste. India produces about 45% of the papaya trees worldwide.
Sandy and well-drained soil in a tropical climate like Singapore are ideal for the growth of the papaya plant. Standing water can kill the papaya tree within 24 hours. Raw papaya pulp contains 88% water, 11% carbohydrates, and a negligible amount of fat and protein. It also provides a significant source of 75% vitamin C and 10% folate of the Daily Value.
